Maine has been participating in
the New England Cross-Country Championships since they began back in 1935. In
those years since there have been times where Maine
didn't always send teams and individuals. Maine
has been the host to the New England XC championships seven times. Waterville
High School is the only Maine
team to capture the New England Team Title doing it twice (1957 & 1976).
In 2004, Maine
teams once again will be able to compete for team championships for the
first time since 1977. Runners from Maine have won
seven individual New England championship races, the first being Morris
Toothaker (1938) from Phillips High School, Paul Firlotte from Ellsworth High
School in 1951, Harold Hatch from Pemetic High School won in 1956, Harvey Barlow
from Deering High School in 1973, Bruce Bickford from Lawrence High School in
1974, Joe Belyea from South Portland High School in 1976, the last being
Louie Luchini from Ellsworth High School in 1998.
